The Lord Watches Over You

Before leaving the U. S. a new friend of mine handed me a card on which she had written out Psalm 121. As I am driving to work each day the words of the Psalmist reverberate in my mind. “I will lift up my eyes to the hills-where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” What a wonderful assurance to know that He is my source of help when I am not sure what direction to head or on which street to turn or remembering to drive on the left side and watch for oncoming traffic to my right when making a left hand turn! Indeed His protection over me (even from myself!) is complete. “He will watch over your coming and your going…”

I took this photo from the area around the State House looking back towards Windhoek. I couldn’t help but marvel at the contrast between the opulence and beauty of the State House and the living conditions of the people just outside the city in Katutura. From this vantage point overlooking the city it is difficult to see details and until you come out of the hills it would appear that all is right…all is well.

While the process of becoming conformed to the image of Christ himself may seem daunting I consider His ministry and the tactics He used to become incarnate, one with the culture. While praying on the mountainside was vital, He didn’t dwell there. He walked among the people wherever they were. He walked. He touched. He healed. He lifted up. He wept. He rejoiced. He is the Son of Man and the Maker of heaven and earth!

Upon completing my first official week of “work,” to say I am overwhelmed by the needs of the children and families here in Katutura would be an understatement. Abigail, the director of Family of Hope Services (FHS), and I are working together on the need to communicate with the wonderful sponsors of some of our children on a consistent basis, keeping them better informed. Also, we want to engage new sponsors for our children who don’t currently have one. This is my current challenge.

“My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth…He who watches over you will not slumber…He will watch over your coming and your going.”
